It was Cecchi who started a journey that led to what now can be defined as a perfect blend between innovation and tradition.
It is in the ability to predict the future that one of the secrets of Cecchi Family success lays; a sort of gift handed down from father to son.
Every step forward taken by the winery throughout its history has been preceded by careful and thorough experimentation, and it is the respect for tradition that has always led the family in making its daily decisions.
The family estates are in the most famous production areas in Tuscany and Umbria, and are Villa Cerna, Castello Montauto, Val delle Rose and Tenuta Alzatura.
Historical estate in the Chianti Classico area, Villa Cerna is 280 metres above sea level and the exposure of its vineyards, the diversity of the soils available and the microclimatic nuances create the particular features of the wines that are born here.
The estate now comprises about 80 hectares of vineyards planted with Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Colorino Toscano, as well as a vinification and ageing cellar where the labels produced are Primocolle di Villa Cerna Chianti Classico and Villa Cerna Chianti Classico Riserva, two wines of remarkable elegance and character.
When the family bought Val delle Rose, it consisted of just 25 hectares which have now become over 150. One of the most well- known estates in the Tuscan Maremma, it is characterised by the huge potential of the terroir.
After the dutiful and clever organisation of the agronomic part, the estate launched the construction of a new cellar, now equipped with the latest technology, for the best possible vilification of the grapes harvested
In addition to Morellino di Scansano, the wines made here are Litorale, Vermentino Maremma Toscana DOC and Aurelio, a Rosso Maremma Toscana DOC.
At the end of the Nineties, the Cecchi family invested in the production zone of Sagrantino di Montefalco, a prestigious appellation in Umbria, acknowledging the combination of the Sagrantino grape variety and the favoured terroir of this grape, their unique expression and the social and cultural roots of local viticulture, as those factors responsible for the quality achieved by the Tuscan estates.
Unlike the other Tuscan estates, which are formed into a single vineyard, Tenuta Alzatura has the different vineyards in three different areas, Monterone, San Marco and Alzatura.
The soil types, the material used for the plantation and the attention devoted to the various vegetative phases of the vine and subsequently to production, have determined the ideal conditions for the birth of wines of great substance and considerable varietal typicality, Montefalco Sagrantino and Montefalco Rosso.
The link between the Cecchi family and San Gimignano dates back to the end of the Second World War. It was then that the family found shelter on the hills of the splendid Tuscan town.
The feeling that this was an area perfectly suited to high-quality winegrowing convinced the family initially to produce Vernaccia di San Gimignano, joined in recent years by Chianti.
The plantation arrangements are modern and have a high vine density, thus allowing lower grape yields. The estate comprises 48 hectares of vineyards, over twenty of which devoted to Vernaccia, at an average altitude of 300 metres above sea level.
The two wines produced are both distinguished by the fact that they are so pleasant.
